The Collectif 4237, which primarily works in circus arts, aims to bring together the performing arts community to occupy and animate urban spaces and to make culture accessible to everyone.
Since 2021, this collective has created, from start to finish, short urban shows called "Neighborhood Cabarets." The theatrical-circus scenes created by Collectif 4237 offer a contemporary vision of how urban landscapes are used. During the pandemic, the Collective invited the public to walk through streets and alleys, and the resulting work deconstructs the nature of these places while following the classic cabaret format.
The collective invites professional performers from the worlds of music, circus, dance, and theater to create unique urban performances. COLLECTIF 4237 was born in 2020, as group members sought innovative ways to continue their practice in the context of the pandemic. After some self-managed initiatives, we received financial support from the CALQ in 2021 as part of the "Public Presentations with Physical Distancing" program. We then presented 18 cabarets.
In three years, Cabaret 4237 has come a long way, refining its formula: more live music, featuring more than 40 artists from Montreal and beyond, and a now-popular signature: the 1977 Dodge camper shows up in a pedestrian street or in the middle of nature. Like a surprise box, out comes a whirlwind of madness and music. Acrobatics, juggling, and guaranteed laughter.
Among the founders are Zoé St-Onge, Pascal Duguay Gosselin (Cirque Hors Piste, Extravaganzart), Carlos Verdin Barba (Nacho Con Salsa, Éloize), Lena Nisenson (Cirque Intime), and myself, Sylvain Bouillere (Le Patin Libre, Cirque Hors Piste).
The collaborators and other artists joining the collective's projects are high-level artists, mostly from Montreal, along with some international artists from various backgrounds. Among them are street artists (Carlos Verdin, Nicolas Vanyurick, Pascal Duguay Gosselin), graduates from major circus schools (Santiago Rivera, Kaisha Wright, Morgane Claudel), retirees from major companies (Marjorie Nantel, Valérie Doucet), and self-taught artists (Samantha Halas, Lorenzo Serafino).
Whether in nature or exploring urban architecture, the performances of Collectif 4237 are spontaneous, autonomous, and aim for the artistic reappropriation of spaces. The mobility of the shows allows for adaptable versions that can surprise the public in their daily life.
